Brief
Orcha is a small yet interesting town situated on the banks of River Betwa in
the northern part of Madhya Pradesh. The town was once covered with thick forest
from all four sides and was discovered by Bundela rulers only in the year 1531.
It also served as a capital to the Bundela Kings. It is dotted with numerous
temples and palaces, which were built between 16th and 17th century. The
monuments build by the Bundela rulers are deemed as the best example of
Indo-Islamic architecture.Of the succeeding rulers, the most notable was Raja
Bir Singh Ju Deo who built the exquisite Jehangir Mahal, a tiered palace crowned
by graceful chhatris. From here the view of soaring temple spires and cenotaphs
is spectacular.

Jehangir Mahal
Orcha's single most admired palace, the Jehangir Mahal,
was built by Bir Singh Deo as a monumental welcome present for the Mughal
emperor Jehangir when he paid a state visit in the 17th century. Entered through
an ornate ceremonial gateway, the east-facing facade is encrusted with turquoise
tiles. Two stone elephants flank the stairway, holding bells in their trunks to
announce the arrival of the Raja. Three storeys of elegant hanging balconies,
terraces, apartments and onion domes are piled around a central courtyard.
The Sheesh Mahal
Built during the early 18th century, long after Orcha's
demise, the Sheesh Mahal ("Palace of Mirrors") was originally intended as an
exclusive country retreat for the local Raja, Udait Singh. Covered in whitewash
and stripped of most of its Persian rugs and antiques, the building retains
little of its former splendour, though it does offer stunning views from its
upper terraces and turrets.
Chaturbhuj Temple
Built upon a massive stone platform and reached by a steep
flight of steps, the temple was specially constructed to enshrine the image of
Rama that remained in the Ram Raja Temple. Lotus emblems and other symbols of
religious significance provide the delicate exterior ornamentation. Within, the
sanctum is chastely plain with high, vaulted walls emphasizing its deep
sanctity.
Laxminarayan Temple
A flagstone path links this temple with the Ram Raja Temple. The style is an
interesting synthesis of fort and temple moulds. The interiors contain the most
exquisite of Orcha's wall paintings. Covering the walls and ceiling of three
halls, these murals are vibrant compositions and cover a variety of spiritual
and secular subjects. They are in excellent state of preservation, with the
colours retaining their vivid quality.
Dinman Hardaul's Palace
Hardaul was the son of Bir Singh Ju Deo, and died to prove his innocence to his
elder brother Jhujhar who cast doubts on his relationship with his (Jhujhar's)
consort. This saintly prince was, after his martyrdom, worshipped as a god and
even today, the villages of Bundelkhand contain platform like shrines where
Hardaul is worshipped.
Phool Bagh
Laid out as a formal garden, this complex testifies to the
refined aesthetic qualities of the Bundelas. A central row of fountains
culminates in an eight pillared palace-pavilion. A subterranean structure below
was the cool summer retreat of the Orcha kings. An ingenious system of water
ventilation connects the underground palace with Chandan Katora, a bowl-like
structure from whose fountains droplets of water filtered through to the roof,
simulating rainfall.
Shopping
As such, Orcha does not have any local specialty, which
has attained perfection over the ages by the ace craftsmen. But for the
passionate shopper Orcha offers metal artifacts, which is one of the
traditional craft in Madhya Pradesh.
